Using Idioms for Teaching Individuals with Autism [Free Resource]

Jan 04 2016

ASD

Idioms are a great tool for teaching. First, many individuals with ASD have difficulty understanding idioms due to the abstract language. This Idiom Explainer sheet will help clarify a common idiom. Second, idioms have been used for generations to help amplify messages and deal with situations. This Idiom Explainer is “seeing the forest through the trees”. Many individuals with ASD focus on the details of a situation rather than big picture, and this sheet can help to refocus on the bigger picture. When this happens, simply have your student read the definition and the example, then fill out the “TREES” and the “FOREST” with your student. You may even cross out the “TREES” after you fill in the sheet to make it more clear what they should be focusing on!
